25th Annual Logan Square House and Garden Walk

This year, Logan Square Preservation presented its 25th annual House and Garden Walk on Saturday, September 9th, 2006. Over 1000 people from Chicago, neighboring suburbs and nearby states toured the interiors of some of the most spectacular homes on Logan Boulevard.

In 1980, a small group of Logan Square citizens recognized the significance of the boulevards which ran through the neighborhood and their historic importance in the early development of Chicago. Along these boulevards were some of the best preserved examples of early 20th century architecture still in pristine condition. Wishing to engender an interest in conserving these great architectural icons, a not-for-profit organization, Logan Square Preservation, was created to preserve the architecture, beauty and history of the neighborhood.

At that time Logan Square did not have a very good reputation, and many people were fearful of venturing into the neighborhood. To demonstrate that Logan Square was indeed a wonderful community and one to be admired and not feared, a House Walk was created to invite both local citizens and others from the Chicago area to come into our community and homes. It was a success, and people from all over Chicago attended the Walk, marveling at the beauty and wonder of the large homes built by the wealthy in the early 1900s. They were impressed that although most large mansions in other parts of the city had long since vanished or were markedly altered, the homes along these boulevards still mantained their original glory and majesty, envisioned by the original home owners who commissioned their construction.

Over the years, the House and Garden Walk became a popular attraction in early Fall, bringing more and newer participants each year. People who originally were sketical about venturing into the neighborhood, changed their minds and many even bought houses here years later. This year, the Walk began at 3024 W. Logan Boulevard (photo above). You can read more about the 2006 House and Garden Walk.
